My work is about my experiences with my family, the aftermath of death and my own musings on the body. The idea of family skin came from my need to have a more tangible connection to the individuals in my family beyond our self-contained bodies. I believe that between family members there is a bond which consists of many different elements in order to envelop multiple generations under one protective covering. The basis of these elements can be divided into two categories; one, as a family we have shared experiences and two, a shared sense of place as to where we belong. I am now currently exploring the idea of a collective skin which we are all connected to and have tactile experiences with. Skin is the most basic way we can experience, and understand our surroundings. We take great comfort in connecting with the world through this tactile sensory experience. I believe it is through this sensation of touch and the visual patterns repeated in our daily lives we gather an element of comfort and a larger sense of community and connection to our surrounding environment.
